Getting it right when you buy your Home Theatre System

Like any other major purchase, you want your home theatre system to be a perfect match with your personal taste, just like your automobile. It will be with you for a long time to come, so your choices are important if you want to get the maximum for your money in enjoyment and function.

You might find a good used car with some luck, but you may also be disappointed in it’s performance, and it won’t be as reliable, or under warranty, like a new one. So take your time to educate yourself and the dividends will be worth the effort. Like any other purchase, research is the key, so don’t be shy about asking questions. You can start now.

What exactly is a home theatre?

Home theatres are several components that include a screen, player, receiver, and speakers that are intended to emulate, or exceed, the movie-going experience. When you consider the cost of going to the movies, and the quality of modern HDTV and DVD reproduction, improving on the experience is easy to do if you’re prepared to invest some money, and take the time to make the right choices. The long-lines, pricey tickets, less than sanitary seating and floors, are eliminated once you’ve installed a home theatre system in your home.

Home theatre refers to any group of audio/visual components that, assembled properly, can actually exceed the standards you are accustomed to at your local movie theatre. You also have the ability to watch regular programming in an enhanced environment, far superior to normal CRT TV or even big screen TV’s that were popular prior to the advent of home theatres. You can also personalize your home theatre to accomodate your tastes, your price range, and your home.

But how much?

The price ranges of the various home theatre systems depend on the components. If you are satisfied with a wide-screen TV, or already have one, you can cut costs to a minimum. DVD players are common and inexpensive, so your major decisions, and costs, usually concern the speakers and the projection system.

If you do not intend to upgrade from a wide-screen TV, and already own a DVD player, you can improve your system dramatically with surround sound speakers, receiver, and the associated connections. You should research whether your existing equipment is compatible with add-ons since many are designed specifically for use with larger projection units or HDTV screening.

Emulating a movie theatre experience relies heavily on the quality and size of the screen, so without those components, you will be limited in your capacity to emulate the movie theatre experience. Since the market is becoming flooded with bundled packages of components, you might find that a good system is in your price range. Check out those systems to see if they are affordable. You might want to dispose of your old big-screen TV, and step up to the home theatre experience.
